There are many myth’s surrounding women’s bodybuilding, and women’s weight training – it’s time to face the truth!


Will weight training make me bulky?

 

Women don’t produce the amounts of testosterone needed to gain large amounts of muscle. Unfortunately, the image that may come to your mind is that of professional female bodybuilders. This is a false picture, and the reality is that real women don’t and can’t grow 20 inch biceps without some serious assistance (this is not a training partner either).

 

Also your shape very much depends upon your genetic make up, which has a huge influence on your overall shape and fat levels.


Will weight training make me inflexible?

 

Actually you will become more flexible whilst working out in the gym. The range of movements you employ will make you more supple, and stronger.


Does muscle turn to fat when I stop?

 

Muscle and fat are totally different, and no, one does not turn into the other. When you stop training you lose muscle, and become softer, and because you are less active you will put on body fat. So, to sum this up, less activity and poor diet will lead to a less muscled higher fat body.


Can I eat what I want if I am training.

 

I would love this to be true, but the answer is no. If you eat more calories than you need then you will gain weight. Even those bodybuilders who are trying to add muscle do not over eat. They eat high quality protein based foods – excess eating will lead to higher fat levels.

Should women only use light weights?

 

Yet another ridiculous statement!! Women who just spend hours on the treadmill end up burning not only fat but muscle for energy too. They become skinny and withered looking – not pleasant. Women need to use the weights to get a great shape and some tone to their physique. The extra muscle will also speed up the metabolism, burning more calories. There is also a very important benefit for older women, and that is the increase in bone density gained by weight training – helping to prevent osteoporosis.
