Lose Weight ~ the basics 

 

 

We would all like to drop those extra pounds, and YOU CAN . The best and most effective way is to combine a healthy eating plan with regular exercise. Diet is the wrong word to use, and often results in people starving themselves of the correct nutrients to do this properly. All you will do by following those regimes is loose muscle and shrink down. Then once you resume normal eating again the weight will come straight back on. You actually need to eat more of the correct foods to achieve the best results. Small regular meals are the way to go, following the guidelines below. 

 

  • Ensure that you eat every 2-3 hours
  • Portion size is important – use the palm of your hand as a guideline. People often fail at this point, eating portions that are far too large.
  • The types of food you eat are equally important. Protein (lean meat/eggs/supplements) is the best way to go, along with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Keep away from processed foods – foods labelled as low fat/low sugar are what can only be described as sheep dressed in wolf’s clothes. These products are full of hidden calories and additives that will restrict your progress.
  • Plan ahead – failing to do this will result in you rushing to the fridge at the last minute, and grabbing just what is there. This will inevitably not be a healthy option.
  • Always have healthy snacks available for emergencies, such as almonds, rice cakes, apples, bananas etc.
  • Avoid sugar. This is more of a problem than you think. Excess sugar will be stored as fat if not used for energy, and all it gives you is an instant spike of energy, leaving you in need of more very quickly. You need to keep your energy levels constant throughout the day.
  • You do require some fats – olive oil is a good one to go with. Avoid hard fats such as butter, low fat spreads and hard cheese. These are loaded with calories and will end up on your stomach, hips and thighs without a doubt.
  • Avoid Yo Yo Diets
  • Restrict your salt intake. This is hidden in all processed foods and especially breads. The best type of bread if you have it is freshly baked wholemeal or wholegrain loaves. It should however be eaten in moderation only. 1-2 slices per day is OK.
  • Avoid heavy carbohydrates after 6pm. This includes potatoes rice and pasta. With your evening meal fill your plate with vegetables to fill yourself up.
  • Drink lots of water – at least 2 litres per day, and restrict the amount of tea and coffee you consume. Green tea and herbal teas are a great alternative. Most of us are dehydrated and drink far to little water resulting in that puffy feeling we all experience after a good night out!!
  • Cut down on alcohol. This gives you an excess of calories, of no nutritional value at all. By all means have one or two glasses per week. White wine is the best option. Beers will just go straight to your spare tyre.
  • Make your own sauces for meats using such things as tinned tomatoes etc, again to reduce calories from fats and sugars.
